DanceSport is the term used to refer to the activity combining dance with sport. Also, this term refers to competitive dance rather than social or performance/exhibition dancing. Generally, it is used for competitive ballroom dancing but can be used in other contexts like wheel chair dance sport. Furthermore, this term was developed to help ballroom dancing gain recognition with the Olympic committee.

Finally, in 1997, the Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland grants full recognition to the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF). Meanwhile, in 2011, the IDSF changed it name to World DanceSport Federation (WDSF).

Ballroom Competition Dance

International Style dancing was developed in Europe and is still popular there today. In addition, other parts of the world have adopted this style including Japan. Also, it can be considered the style of choice for competition dancers and organizers. International Ballroom (standard) includes the dance genres of waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, slow foxtrot and quickstep. Moreover, in 2015, the world champions in International ballroom were Cameron Jennings & Katusha Demidova.

Also, International Latin includes the dance genres of cha cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive. Accordingly, in 2015, the world Latin champions were Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko. Additionally, Ten Dance is another catergory included in the International style of dancing. Generally, it includes the five Latin and five Ballroom (previously title Standard) International style dances. Subsequently, the 2016 champions for ten dance were Alexandru Shindils & Jade Main from England.

American Style dancing developed in the United States. In addition, it is the best style for social dancing. In addition, it is a competition category. Also, there are two sub-categories. For example, American Smooth dancing includeds the waltz, tango, foxtrot and Viennese waltz.  So then, in 2016, the American professional smooth champions were Nick Cheremukhin & Viktorija. Finally, the American rhythm includes the cha-cha-cha, rumba, East Coast swing, bolero and mambo. Furthermore, the 2016 world professional champions were Nazar Norov & Irina Kudryashova.
