The New York City Ballet was on European tour that took them to Edinburgh in Scotland, Athens, Greece and also Parma, Italy in September 2001.

On the evening of September 11, 2001 they were to perform in Parma, Italy for the Verdi Festival  at the Teatro Reggio. The dance company began to receive news of the events at home in New York City (continued below).

The Ballet Master, Peter Martins and the dancers realized it would be impossible to perform considering the events of that day, so the sold out performance for that evening was cancelled.

Peter Martins, the Ballet Master of the New York Ballet, spoke to the audience in attendance telling them that it would be impossible for them to perform that evening as their hearts were broken after hearing the events of the day but that they would return and perform the following day, September 12th, 2001. They did perform the next day at the Teatro Reggio, September 12th, 2001.
