The Beautiful Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz became popular in the mid-18th century. It is the oldest ballroom dance evolving from older German and Austrian dances like the Landler that go back to the 1700’s. It was considered scandalous in its day because the dance couples were in an embrace facing each other unlike the other more formal dances of the day like the French Minuet. From the mid-nineteenth century forward the more romantic close embrace facing position style dances replaced the formal dance genres like the Minuet.

Composers like Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II and Tchaikovsky brought Viennese Waltz music to a broad swath Europeans in the mid-nineteenth century raising it to the more cultured part of the population eventually.

(Blue Danube by the Silvester Ballet & Vienna Orchestra 2008)The Viennese Waltz is a ballroom partner dance with a 3/4 beat with basics in six steps making up two bars of music. It is twice as fast as the slower English Waltz. The New Year is Austria is filled with hundreds of Viennese Balls scheduled from January all the way through March every year. Most certainly the most famous Viennese Waltz is the Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II.
